He also likes to play with cars and trucks and can move them around on the tray of his wheelchair. Kevin is diagnosed with Spina Bifida, Hydrocephalus, and a seizure disorder. Because he is paralyzed below the waist, he uses a wheelchair for mobility. He is non-verbal and needs assistance with daily living activities. Kevin is fed with the help of a G-button, but his therapists hope he will one day be able to eat and swallow on his own. Kevin is very small for his age and therefore looks younger than he is. Kevin has a good attitude and often smiles and yells when he accomplishes his goals in his therapy sessions. He expects everyone to clap when he does well! Kevin is able to sit on a small chair with support of a foot rest to help balance his movements. He will reach for items to play with and for people in order to get their attention. Kevin must be closely monitored at all times, as he will sometimes try to bite himself when upset or excited. Kevin wears padded arm covers to protect himself from injury. Sometimes when he is upset, such as during bath time, he may become physical and hit, bite, or pull others’ hair. Kevin loves school and is happiest when someone is talking and interacting with him. Kevin receives occupational, physical, and speech therapy at school and has made great progress. He is now able to sit up on his own, is more receptive to interaction, and can push a toy back and forth.

Profile

Meet Kimberly, Katelyn, and Thomas; a threesome who are very bonded to each other. Though, at times, they have disagreements, this group enjoys activities together such as playing outside. Are you up for some outdoor games, trips to the park, or some time at the playground? Kimberly, Katelyn, and Thomas sure are. Kimberly enjoys playing with Barbies and she plays well on her own. She also enjoys playing on swings and slides. Katelyn is usually upbeat and happy. She enjoys playing outside, swinging, playing with Barbies, and watching movies that involve princesses or Barbie. Thomas is all boy and full of energy and activity. He enjoys playing with airplanes, helicopters, cars, and building blocks. As a group, Katelyn, Thomas, and Kimberly are skilled at knowing what they want and how they would like things to go. They love feeling like they can accomplish what they set their minds to and exerting their independence. This can definitely serve them well with the right guidance. They will benefit from close supervision and guidance while they learn appropriate times and safe ways to express their independence.

Family Profile

Kimberly, Katelyn, and Thomas need a family who has experience working with or raising children and providing frequent supervision. The ideal family will be skilled and able to provide a structured, nurturing, and supportive home. They will provide clearly defined limits consistently and firmly while providing a safe space for the children’s emotions to be validated and expressed. Personal Profile

Kimberly is a loving little girl who enjoys practicing her nurturing skills being a mommy. Playing with Barbies or her other dolls is one of her favorite activities. Kimberly enjoys playing with her siblings, but she also likes to play alone. She loves being outside riding her bike or swinging. Kimberly is observant and likes to take stock of a new activity or a new person initially. While usually shy when first meeting someone, once she gets to know you she is very social. When around people she is comfortable with and knows well, she is outspoken and generally has no problem telling them how she feels, what she thinks, or what she wants. Kimberly learns at a slower rate than other children her age and receives supportive services and speech therapy at school. The services she receives at school help ensure that she masters the material she needs to. Step by step instructions that provide her with only a few tasks at a time help Kimberly. She loves to feel like she will be successful at her task and can become overwhelmed by too many instructions or tasks that she may feel are difficult. Kimberly responds well to the routine and reassurance she gets when her caregivers consistently take the time each night to support her and work with her to complete her homework or reading assignments. Kimberly has learned how to express what she needs and how she feels verbally. She can tell you when she is overwhelmed or frustrated and why. However, when she is feeling overwhelmed or frustrated she may express this using physical behavior. Kimberly is learning anger management techniques to calm herself when she is upset.

Desired Family Profile

Kimberly needs an experienced family who can be very structured, as well as nurturing. She needs a family who is willing to help her with her homework and participate in any services she may need, including advocating for her with the school. Full of life and energy, Katelyn typically spends about 20 minutes on some activities and then is off to begin a different adventure. If given three magical wishes Katleyn wants, “lots of dinosaurs, mermaids, and princesses, and stuffed animals.” Katelyn loves centers at school. She can struggle in school with not doing her work, not following directions, and talking. She does not like it when the teacher “moves my clip” as a warning or consequence. Katelyn is a leader at heart and likes to take charge. She is quite capable of deciding how she wants things to go and knowing what she wants. As a natural leader, she tackles following directions from others as a challenge. When things are not able to go the way she envisioned, she will benefit from extra guidance, nurturing, and support with firm boundaries.
